Copepod Grazing Influences Diatom Aggregation and Particle Dynamics ArchiMer
Toullec, Jordan; Vincent, Dorothée; Frohn, Laura; Miner, Philippe; Le Goff, Manon; Devesa, Jérémy; Moriceau, Brivaela.
In marine ecosystems, carbon export is driven by particle flux which is modulated by aggregation, remineralization, and grazing processes. Zooplankton contribute to the sinking flux through the egestion of fast sinking fecal pellets but may also attenuate the flux by tearing apart phytoplankton aggregates into small pieces through swimming activity or direct ingestion. Freely suspended cells, artificial monospecific aggregates from two different diatom species (Chaetoceros neogracile and Skeletonema marinoi) and natural aggregates of Melosira sp. were independently incubated with five different copepod species (Acartia clausi, Temora longicornis, Calanus helgolandicus, Euterpina acutifrons, and Calanus hyperboreus). During the grazing experiments initiated...

Devenir des bactéries dans les réseaux trophiques des vasières intertidales : le cas de brouage (Baie de Marennes-Oléron) ArchiMer
Pascal, Pierre-yves.
Bacteria are highly abundant and productive in intertidal mudflat sediments. By analogy with pelagic system, it has been suggested that bacteria play an important role in benthic food web. Due to technical difficulties, numbers of studies dealing with benthic bacterivory are not numerous and give conflicting results. A method using community of 15N enriched bacteria as tracer was developed in order to measure grazing of meiofauna and macrofauna. Since enriched bacteria present characteristics of size, activity and diversity close to natural ones, bias due to selective bacterial ingestion by grazers are limited. Due to tidal cycles, intertidal mudflat constitutes highly variable environment at short time scale. Since those variations may influence...

High frequency mesozooplankton monitoring: Can imaging systems and automated sample analysis help us describe and interpret changes in zooplankton community composition and size structure — An example from a coastal site ArchiMer
Romagnan, Jean-baptiste; Aldamman, Lama; Gasparini, Stephane; Nival, Paul; Aubert, Anais; Jamet, Jean Louis; Stemmann, Lars.
The present work aims to show that high throughput imaging systems can be useful to estimate mesozooplankton community size and taxonomic descriptors that can be the base for consistent large scale monitoring of plankton communities. Such monitoring is required by the European Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) in order to ensure the Good Environmental Status (GES) of European coastal and offshore marine ecosystems. Time and cost-effective, automatic, techniques are of high interest in this context. An imaging-based protocol has been applied to a high frequency time series (every second day between April 2003 to April 2004 on average) of zooplankton obtained in a coastal site of the NW Mediterranean Sea, Villefranche Bay. One hundred eighty four...

High prey-predator size ratios and unselective feeding in copepods: A seasonal comparison of five species with contrasting feeding modes ArchiMer
Djeghri, Nicolas; Atkinson, Angus; Fileman, Elaine S.; Harmer, Rachel A.; Widdicombe, Claire E.; Mcevoy, Andrea J.; Cornwell, Louise; Mayor, Daniel J..
There has been an upsurge of interest in trait-based approaches to zooplankton, modelling the seasonal changes in the feeding modes of zooplankton in relation to phytoplankton traits such as size or motility. We examined this link at two English Channel plankton monitoring sites south of Plymouth (L4 and El). At L4 there was a general transition from diatoms in spring to motile microplankton in summer and autumn, but this was not mirrored in the succession of copepod feeding traits; for example the ambushing Oithona similis dominated during the spring diatom bloom. At nearby El we measured seasonality of food and grazers, finding strong variation between 2014 and 2015 but overall low mesozooplankton biomass (median 4.5 mg C m(-3)). We also made a seasonal...

Mise au point d'un test microcrustacé marin ArchiMer
Marcaillou-le Baut, Claire; Le Dean, Loic; Chiffoleau, Jean-francois; Sanjuan, Jane.
Because of the low number of currently available toxicity tests for marine environment, the authors describe an experimental procedure using a marine copepod : Tigriopus brevicornis. This method can be used to quantify the 50 % inhibition of larval production or growth. The variability in controls larval production reaches about 9 %. The toxicity of two contaminants : tributyltin (TBTF) and cadmium chloride (CdCl2) was determined with this method and the 50 % decreases in larval production are respectively 1,4 µg/l (TBTF) and 61 µg/l (Cd++).

Rediscovered after 77 years: Odontodiaptomus thomseni - a rare species of calanoid (Crustacea: Copepoda) from South America Rev. Bras. Zool.
Perbiche-Neves,Gilmar; Boxshall,Geoff A.; Rocha,Carlos E. F. da; Nogueira,Marcos G..
The freshwater copepod Odontodiaptomus thomseni (Brehm, 1933) (Calanoida: Diaptomidae) is a rare species that has been reported only once - in its original description (BREHM 1933). The lack of subsequent records led to its inclusion in the Red List of threatened species (IUCN). Here we present a new record for O.thomseni. It was discovered in Salto Grande reservoir, which is located in the lower stretches of the Uruguay River, between Uruguay and Argentina, at the River Plate basin. In January 2010, three specimens (two males and one female) were found, and these were studied in detail using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). We only had material of Odontodiaptomus paulistanus (Wright, 1936) for comparison, but the position of the lateral spine in right...

Seasonal variation in the copepod community structure from a tropical Amazon estuary, Northern Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
Magalhães,André; Leite,Natália da R.; Silva,João G.S.; Pereira,Luci C.C.; Costa,Rauquírio M. da.
The main purpose of this study was to investigate the seasonal variation of copepod community structure during the months of July, September and November 2003 (dry season) and January, March and May 2004 (rainy season) in the Curuçá estuary, northern Brazil. Samples were collected during neap tides via gentle 200µm mesh net tows from a small powerboat. Measurements of surface water conductivity were accomplished in situ using an electronic conductivimeter and salinity was later obtained through the transformation of the conductivity values. Salinity varied seasonally from 7.2 ± 0.1 to 39.2 ± 1.8 (mean ± standard deviation) and was influenced mainly by differences in the amount of rainfall between the studied sampling seasons. In total, 30 Copepoda taxa...

The parasitic dinoflagellates Blastodinium spp. inhabiting the gut of marine, planktonic copepods: morphology, ecology, and unrecognized species diversity ArchiMer
Skovgaard, Alf; Karpov, Sergey A.; Guillou, Laure.
Blastodinium is a genus of dinoflagellates that live as parasites in the gut of marine, planktonic copepods in theWorld’s oceans and coastal waters. The taxonomy, phylogeny, and physiology of the genus have only been explored to a limited degree and, based on recent investigations, we hypothesize that the morphological and genetic diversity within this genus may be considerably larger than presently recognized. To address these issues, we obtained 18S rDNA and ITS gene sequences for Blastodinium specimens of different geographical origins, including representatives of the type species. This genetic information was in some cases complemented with new morphological, ultrastructural, physiological, and ecological data. Because most current knowledge about...

The planktonic stages of the salmon louse ( Lepeophtheirus salmonis) are tolerant of end-of-century p CO2 concentrations ArchiMer
Thompson, Cameron R.s.; Fields, David M.; Bjelland, Reidun M.; Chan, Vera Bin San; Durif, Caroline M.f.; Mount, Andrew; Runge, Jeffrey A.; Shema, Steven D.; Skiftesvik, Anne Berit; Browman, Howard I..
The copepod Lepeophtheirus salmonis is an obligate ectoparasite of salmonids. Salmon lice are major pests in salmon aquaculture and due to its economic impact Lepeoph- theirus salmonis is one of the most well studied species of marine parasite. However, there is limited understanding of how increased concentration of pCO2 associated with ocean acidification will impact host-parasite relationships. We investigated the effects of increased pCO2 on growth and metabolic rates in the planktonic stages, rearing L. salmonis from eggs to 12 days post hatch copepodids under three treatment levels: Control (416 matm), Mid (747 matm), and High (942 matm). The pCO2 treatment had a significant effect on oxygen consumption rate with the High treatment animals exhibiting...

Two practical approaches to monitoring the zooplanktonic community at Lago Grande do Curuai, Pará, Brazil Acta Amazonica
GOMES,Leonardo Fernandes; VIEIRA,Ludgero Cardoso Galli; BONNET,Marie Paule.
The use of substitute groups in biomonitoring programs has been proposed to minimize the high financial costs and time for samples processing. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the correlation between (i) the spatial distribution among the major zooplankton groups (cladocerans, copepods, rotifers, and testaceans protozoa), (ii) the data of density and presence/absence of species, and (iii) the data of species, genera, and families from samples collected in the Lago Grande do Curuai, Pará, Brazil. A total of 55 sample of the zooplanktonic community was collected, with 28 samples obtained in March and 27 in September, 2013. The agreement between the different sets of data was assessed using Mantel and Procrustes tests. Our results indicated high...

Utility of 18S rDNA and ITS sequences as population markers for Lepeophtheirus salmonis (Copepoda: Caligidae) parasitising Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) in Scotland Naturalis
Shinn, A.P.; Banks, B.A.; Tange, N.; Bron, J.E.; Sommerville, C.; Aoki, T.; Wootten, R..
Genetic differentiation within the salmon louse Lepeophtheirus salmonis (Krøyer, 1837), was investigated by the sequencing of specific nucleotide regions. Partial sequences of the 18S ribosomal RNA gene and the ribosomal internal transcribed spacer (ITS-1) region from single sea lice were amplified by the polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Lice were collected from wild and farmed Atlantic salmon ( Salmo salar L., 1758) from nine selected localities around the Scottish coastline. A 0.9kb fragment of the 18S ribosomal RNA gene was amplified and compared for several samples of lice which showed no observable differences between the lice from different collection sites confirming the absence of cryptic species. The 454 nucleotide ITS-1 sequence showed...
